Here’s a classic Sonny Boy quote. In 1963, he went on a European tour where he was backed by numerous young British and continental blues bands. Once he returned to the United States he declared
“Those boys over there in Europe wanna play the blues real bad, and they do."
Well that may have been the case then, but not anymore. Just mention the name Clapton and the debate is over. Blues is a world-wide phenomenon that no one country can claim superiority over another. But know one thing, Canadian blues musicians don’t take a back seat to anyone. They’re that good.

A Couple More New Releases
Judy Brown – Say It
Judy is an accomplished singer, songwriter and guitarist who’s released her first ever cd. She put her career on hold to raise two children, but now she’s back with a album packed with 13 original songs. The cd is produced by Gary Kendall (Downchild, and the Mighty Duck Blues Band) and Teddy Leonard (formerly Fathead).
The band consists of Gary on Bass, Teddy on guitars, Michael Fonfara(Downchild) on piano and organ, and Jim Casson (Mighty Duck Blues Band, and Dark Orchard) on drums. Guests include Samantha Martin and Delta Sugar, and Colin Linden on mandolin.
ElLiot and the Audio Kings – Long Live the King
Led by Mike Elliott, formerly of the Maple Blues award winning band Daddy Long Legs, this three-piece band gets your pulse up in a hurry. This cd is steeped in blues but makes no apologies for heading into different directions that verge on hard-hitting rock and roll.
Blues Heroes by Robert Crumb More
Well you might ask who the heck is Robert Crumb More. Those in the know recognize him as an American cartoonist and musician who was founder of the underground comix publication, Zap Comix.
Here’s one of his works that highlight the blues world.
Many of you might go, gee I never heard of these guys. And that’s where the fun starts. Google them. Read about them. Find out who they were and how they contributed to the music scene. You will gather a ton of information.
Until next week, keep your ears glued to the blues.
