Album: Gasoline EP
Label: Self Released
‘Well I ain’t gonna stop till the wheels fall off, and every drop of gasoline burnt’. The chorus line of title track certainly sets the mood for the music of this EP of strong Americana driven by a powerful rock sound. While listening to Dale’s vocals and lyrics, Bruce Springsteen kept coming to mind. There is a gritty realism in the song writing, with strong themes, and story telling that keeps the mind engaged as well as the feet tapping.
The EP contains four original songs and a fine cover of Neil Young’s ‘Heart of Gold’. It’s little wonder that there have been a stream of accolades from music critics, or that one of his songs ‘ Gasoline ’, has won 2nd place in the Americana category of the 2017 Canadian Songwriting competition, for Dale really knows how to craft some fine music.
The title track is a real classic piece of ‘road’ music, so wind down the window, turn it up loud and take off into the distance with your foot to the floor for this song is just perfect, and as the last note fades mention must be made of Dale’s other musical work. His music has appeared in documentary films, online journals and audio books. Also his own PhD research at McGill University (where he has also worked as a lecturer) covers scientific aspects of music, so a broad range of knowledge and skills is available to him.
‘My Birmingham’ is quite superb, and it’s placing in the Unsigned Only competition rankings easily appreciated. To a superb acoustic soundtrack he sings ‘Now I do not believe, it was all to no avail, so I dusted off my heart and hoisted up that sail, by the mercy of the sea, done cursing at the wind, for it will blow my way again.’ Great storytelling.
The fourth track ‘All Gone Now’ keeps the flag flying, and the final track ‘Hard Luck Town’ is a masterclass in its genre, fabulously atmospheric and I hope Springsteen has the privilege of covering this song one day! Mention has to be made of the superb quality of all the musicianship on this EP, it’s that extra polish to the facets that make this gem of an EP stand out.
