Down Under Beats #13
One of Australia’s most unique music festivals is on this weekend, The Gympie Music Muster. Originally titled The Gympie Country Music Muster, the festival has become more broad in its content. The festival is still dominated by country music but others are there too: Jessica Mauboy, Adam Brand, Busby Marou, Graeme Connors, Amber Lawrence, Travis Collins, Sunny Cowgirls, Catherine Britt, Fanny Lumsden, Troy Kemp, Caitlyn Shadbolt, Dean Ray, Adam Eckersley Band, Reece Mastin, Davidson Brothers, Kirsty Lee Akers, Hillbilly Goats, Bondi Cigars, Anne Kirkpatrick, Bushwackers, Mason Rack, Chad Morgan, Missy Lancaster, Travellin’ Still (The Songs of Slim Dusty with Pete Denahy and they Travelling Country Band plus many others.
Gympie is a little town in Queensland which expands when the Muster is on. It is apparently one of the most fun festivals, with camping and an anything goes approach, often in the mud. It is one for the bucket list.
Moving to Victoria
I have accepted a position in Victoria, in the country. I will hopefully be doing community radio at the rather large country music station in the area as well. The Indie Country Music Scene/Alt. Country Music Scene in Victoria is huge. I personally think that most of Australia’s best come from down that way. I will be able to do more for the artists when I am down there but I won’t forget to be there for my fellow New South Welshmen and all of the amazing musos from all around Australia. It does make me closer to Tasmania and South Australia which will help me give you a broader perspective. Just down the road from where I will be living is a place where they have a big country music festival, so I will be in the thick of it. More details soon!
Infamous Five: (Quick Shots)
Michael’s songs are very autobiographical. Yet another Victorian songwriter making his mark. He has some new music coming through soon. His songs are honest, direct and real. He has a no holds barred approach to his songs. (some can’t be played on daytime radio because they drop a few words, but they are just telling it like it is!) Michael can make you laugh with his songs at times (because they reveal everyday stories that we can all related to) and then make you cry when he sings songs about life’s struggles. Nothing is held back, which is why Michael is so respected and loved by his peers. His audience is building.
I have mentioned Becci on here before when I have been talking about the young Indies coming through the ranks. Becci has won multiple awards and fans of all ages. She mainly writes her own songs but she can also tackle the classic country songs. Her songs are very appropriate for her age group, concerning the ups and downs of being a young person but they don’t alienate older audiences. A lovely young lady on the way up.
Kylie is a singer/songwriter from Bellingen, a beautiful part of New South Wales countryside, though she currently lives in Sydney. Her music is a mixture of folk and traditional country. I have mentioned Kylie on here in her community radio capacity. She has a very pure and sweet voice with her lyrics featuring some very important historical and important issues as well as the more light hearted moments. I had the pleasure of a car trip with her from Sydney to Tamworth for the festival this year and it was so much fun. I was able to bear witness to a free concert in the car. She has some new music coming soon.
I have mentioned Michael on here before and I thought that I had mentioned him in the Infamous 5 but I had stupidly missed him, for some crazy reason. Michael is one of my favourite artists. He is about quality rather than quantity. He is a gifted and considered songwriter and his bluesy, husky voice is one for the ages. I saw him about five times this year at Tamworth and I never get tired of him LIVE or on albums. His long awaited Sideshow album was finally released and it was gold. Hopefully, it won’t be too long before we hear another album.
Western Australian, Chelsea Basham, is one of our young pocket dynamos. Over the last five years, Chelsea has evolved into a multi-faceted artist. She can rock it, roll it and cruise it. Her debut album was called “Make my own Sunshine” and she certainly does that. Chelsea is a great LIVE act who appeals to Country Rockers and audiences of all ages. Her bubbly personality and her boundless energy add to her strong vocals and her ability to change it up. In 2016, she released Youngest which was a totally different collection of soul and folk tunes. In 2017 she was voted Female Vocalist of the year in the CMC Music Awards.
Carpenter/Caswell Melbourne Album Launch
Two of Australia’s finest songwriters and multi talented artists, Michael Carpenter and Allan Caswell have united to produce a self-titled album to be launched this weekend in Melbourne, supported by The Weeping Willows and Katie Brianna. They will be doing a few launches of the album over the next few weeks. Three singles have already been released (which I have played on here). Their current single, High Hopes is a very inspiring and catchy song. I will be reviewing the album very shortly.....it is a beauty.
There are lots of great things to report soon. Hold on to your hats....there’s some big stuff coming.
Hooroo until next time
