Downunder Beats 25
Exciting weekend coming up for me, I am going to venture to Melbourne (about 1 hr and 55 on the train) for a long weekend. For the first time in my 9 weeks here, I will be able to catch up with family and old friends. I am going to a few gigs, hopefully. Rick Hart, The Weeping Willows and Gretta Ziller amongst others. When I picked Victoria and Victoria picked me (Canadian link right there!), I did it because I have so many folks down here who are musos and I knew that I could help them a bit. It is Australian Music Month, so there are a lot of gigs going on. The gig that I am going to where my friends, The Weeping Willows feature, also has other bands and artists on. Rick Hart is also in a gig where other acts feature, so hopefully, I will be able to discover some new talent and re-visit some faves. Also, I may be able to get an exclusive with Patsy Toop and David Baird, better known in Australia as The Long and The Short of it. These guys are involved in a very exciting project for Indies and I hope to help them with it.
I may need to come back to the country and work for a rest!
Golden Guitars nominations will be announced next week. They are like the CMAs and Grammys of Australian Country Music, held in Tamworth, our Nashville in January.
I counted up the reviews that I have done on albums this year and it is now about 70! I also have about 10 more to do before my Kazzie awards are announced in December. This is the nicest headache a country music fan can have. There are so many wonderful artists to choose from but who to give the awards to?
I wrote 4 reviews last week, all very different, and there are more to come.
Another thing that I am looking forward to on my mini trip to Melbourne is my little walk around the streets where all of the buskers play. They truly have some of the best buskers in Australia. Some of the buskers end up being major stars, eventually, others already are and just turn up with lesser knowns.
My dear friend, Bob Browne, whom I shared a studio with at 2glf-FM retired yesterday after nearly 40 years at the mic. He has served community radio and the Indies well and his 3 hour final show turned into 5 hours. Bob has done so much for so many and gave me a chance at the wheel when most would have not looked at me twice. Lots of Aussie musos called in and he played as many indies as possible. Clem and Dorothy will keep it going. Bob may make a few guest appearances. All Aussie Indies (and some Kiwis) should thank this man for all that he has done.
25 is a special number for me. It is my birthdate, Christmas Day and a year when my life turned around. The next few weeks will be loaded with music and you will be flabbergasted. Australia is buzzing at the moment because Steve Earle is here with our own Aussie Legend, multi Golden Guitar winner and mixed genre best songwriter in Australia, Paul Kelly supporting him. However, there are so many wonderful gigs, albums, singles, festivals and awards looming that you have to stay tuned. Hang on to your hats, everybody!
Cheers and Hooroo for now.
