On the Other Side by Claire Coupland
On the Other Side is a new 5 track EP from Toronto based singer/songwriter Claire Coupland and it is a little diamond. The songs are lyrical beautiful and the musicianship is top class but it is Claire’s voice that takes your breath away. Smokey, earthy and above all, as pure as the mountain air, it is a voice that was made for singing these folk/country songs.
The opening track, Bound for Love, hits the ground running with a song filled with hope and optimism that love will win through in the end. It bounds along with a subtle driving beat and is a fine opener.
Fleet Street is a song of yearning for a love that is in the past and it is vocally beautiful. The addition of brass backing is a surprise but it works brilliantly. The next track, Love in Your Eyes, is probably the standout track from this superb EP. If the brass on the previous track was a surprise, the pedal steel on this track is an absolute joy and adds to another song telling a tale of what might have been. It is quite simply a gorgeous piece of music.
Claire’s dynamic and beautifully pitched vocals continue to impress on the penultimate track, Get Outta This Town. It is another song on the familiar theme of a love story ending and it is filled with passion and angst. The EP closes with This One’s for the Road, another song about leaving. This one drives along at a pace and is delivered with a fervour and intensity.
Listening to this EP leaves you with a feeling of delight at the beautiful vocals, the sublime lyrics and excellent musicality but more than anything, it leaves you wanting more. It is a gorgeous and wholly admirable CD and is highly recommended.
