Album: One Man Blues Rock Band
Tracks : 14
There is a long tradition of one man bands in the blues. From Papa Stovepipe through Jesse Fuller, and on to Duster Bennett (and many more). Steve Hill is very much a 21st Century version of those all-at-the-same-time musicians of the past. Not just blues, but blues rock, loud in your face, amplified, aggressive, but capable of sensitive and gentle work too.
Hill was born in Trois-Rivières, Canada and began playing music seriously at around 12-13 years old. He moved to Montreal in 1993, and by the age of 16 was already a professional guitar player. His ability to play multiple complex instruments at once has evolved to the point where, as he says, “...you can’t really tell it’s one guy, and it’s more intricate than what I used to do...”
Steve simultaneously plays guitar, bass drum, a cymbal, two high hats, maracas, rack harmonica and has a special pickup on his guitar that enables him to play bass and guitar at the same time. (The CD cover image shows the head stock of Steve’s guitar with a drumstick attached to a red ball which he uses to strike the cymbal.)
Here we have fourteen tracks of excellence recorded live at a gig in La Chapelle, Québec, Canada. on November 30, 2017, featuring originals that run from outright rockers (Damned, Dangerous, Rhythm All Over, The Ballad of Jonny Wabo, and Still Got It Bad, to more acoustic-based melodic tracks (Emily) and to re-imagined and rearranged covers including a great version of Voodoo Child - Slight Return (Hendrix) and Little Walter’s Hate To See You Go.
Don't let the idea of a one man band put you off. Steve is as far away from Don Partridge and Leo Sayer as you can possibly imagine. He is an accomplished guitarist and song writer, with an inventive mind.(Wanting to enhance his foot stomping on an earlier album he taped a soft drink can with a few pennies in it to his foot.) Already the winner of awards: The 2015 Juno Award for "Blues Album Of The Year", the 2016 Maple Blues award Winner for "Electric Act Of The Year" as well as "Guitarist Of The Year" & "Entertainer Of The Year", and mark my words, there is MUCH more to come !!
