The Summerfolk Music & Crafts Festival
The Festival attracts performers and fans from across North America and the globe to Kelso Beach Park located on the west shore of Owen Sound on Georgian Bay.
It has a special place in my heart as some of my family come from a place called Kelso in Scotland and it was in the town of Kelso, after a junior league game as a 16 year old, that I was told I had been picked to play at senior level in the Scottish football league.
When I visit the area in Canada, amazingly, it feels like I am coming home, the people are so friendly, the volunteers are some of the best I have ever dealt with, it reminds me of the sense of community that exists in many small towns and villages back home during the festival and Highland games season, but I digress !
The festival was founded in 1975 by brothers Tim and John Harrison and is nationally renowned for its music and craft excellence. It was also a founding member of the Ontario Council of Folk Festivals now known as Folk Music Ontario.
The area is beautiful
The forecast is good for the weekend, Summerfolk is notorious for rain and thunder storms, having experienced heavy downpours in 20 of the first 30 years, although each time I have been there it has been glorious sunshine !
I hope that is not a jinx !
Who is playing at the festival this year ?
One of my favourite performers and people in the Canadian music scene, Suzie is an amazing musician, songwriter and vocalist, she packs a punch whether solo, in a duo, with a trio or in a full band context, she will not disappoint.
Her new album ' Shake The Love Around ' is fabulous.
He has, without a doubt, established himself as a fundamental part of the North American family entertainment scene. And whether it’s through CDs, videos, books or television, his cornerstone philosophy remains the same: absolute trust that his work can make a difference.
Dubbed “Mr. Multi-Media” by Billboard Magazine, his diverse repertoire includes a prolific 12 Children’s Albums, countless energetically packed live shows for throngs of eager audiences across North America.
The multi-award-winning quintet Goitse, was forged in the white-hot creative crucible of Limerick University’s Irish World Academy. Recently crowned Live Ireland’s ‘Trad group of the Year’, Chicago Irish American News’ ‘Group of the Year’, as well as winning the prestigious ‘Freiburger International Leiter 2016’ award in Germany, they have made a name for themselves as one of the most sought after bands amongst connoisseurs of Irish Traditional music. Their third album, Tall Tales and Misadventures, has received rave reviews as the band continues to take the traditional Irish music scene by storm.
I hope that gives a little insight of the diversity that will be there, add to the mix some amazing youth discoveries which Summerfolk is at the forefront of pushing and you have an amazing festival line up yet again.
Blues and RootsRadio really looks forward to this event every year where we get to say hello to old friends and meet many more new ones.
I will be doing a review of the weekend plus we'll be taking lots of photographs and squeezing in some interviews with the artists if we can.
